2002 The idea of a database
The Idea of a Database
Roman, the founder of CodeCheck, was still a student when he was confronted with the complexity of food and cosmetic product labels. Asking himself how he could find suitable products more easily, he looked at the product barcode with fresh eyes. What if you would use them as well for rating products? He began to build a database in which people could track ingredients, nutritional values, and product manufacturers.

Since 2010, data was collected mainly in the app, making CodeCheck Europe's largest product guide with several million products.

At the end of 2013, together with investors, Roman decided to take the next step. Along with today’s CEO Boris, Roman founded the CodeCheck AG one year after, and built new teams in Zurich and Berlin.

Once launched by a student, CodeCheck has now grown into a collaborative project that helps people of the 21st century to critically question their decisions and the impact of these decisions on their health and environment. In 2019, the CodeCheck app has again made it to the top of the App Charts.

In November 2020, Gabriele Ottino, ex-Doodle CEO took over the management of CodeCheck from Boris Manhart. The community grows to over 4.5 million users in 2020.
